THE SOLIDARITY INITIATIVE

EMPOWERING DESCENDANT-LED EFFORTS TO RECKON WITH THE HISTORY OF SLAVERY AND ITS LEGACIES

THE AWUJO FORUM

As a annual congress of Descendant-led organizations, the AWUJO FORUM will promote collaboration among and collective action by Descendant communities around the world.

The Inaugural Convening of the AWUJO FORUM will take place in the fall of 2027.

THE DESCENDANTS’ FUND

The Turner-Hines-Franklin Institute seeks to join forces with foundations, institutions, and individuals committed to liberatory and collaborative approaches to historical research and reckoning.

The THF DESCENDANTS’ FUND will provide research and engagement micro-grants, capacity-building grants, planning grants, and implementation grants to Descendant-led organizations, initiatives, and projects.

How does the THF Institute define “Descendant”?

Like Kinfolkology, the THF Institute uses the term “Descendant” to refer to individuals with African and/or African American ancestors who were enslaved.

While many Descendants have historic records bearing their ancestors’ names, others may only know of enslaved ancestors through stories passed down through generations.

This definition is adapted from the Montpelier Descendants’ Committee’s Guide to Descendant Engagement (also known as “the Rubric”).
